Both SADC and RHVP regard the establishment of a regional CoE as being essential to the sustainable provision of human capacity needed to staff VACs and their constituent VAA systems. A fundamental objective behind this initiative is to promote VAA as a recognised profession backed by accredited qualifications from a respected tertiary academic institution in the region. Following a scoping study and a selection process, the African Centre of Food Security (ACFS) at the University of KwaZulu-Natal was selected to host the CoE.
RHVP is working with the centre to develop a strategic plan and a curriculum for the provision of a comprehensive programme of VAA skills training.
A two-pronged approach is being envisioned for both short- and long-term training and capacity building:

‘on-the-job’ skills transfers and short courses linked to appropriate training institutions; and

longer-term training aligned to both undergraduate and postgraduate academic programmes.
