Swaziland: Good news for the elderly
22 February 2008
Mbabane - A fund dealing specifically with the distribution of money for the elderly will be established soon.
Informing the media, Minister of Enterprise and Employment Lutfo Dlamini, stated that they were in the process of forming a fund, which would be called the Social Welfare Assistance Fund. This was at a meeting held at the Police Headquarters, attended by Tindvuna Tetinkhundla and other officials.
This fund will deal specifically with the distribution of money to the elderly and is meant to start operating in April or, at the latest, May. The formation of this fund will ensure that the elderly are paid fairly and in time.
The fund is also in the process of forming criteria that will be set and written for purposes of standardisation.
Previously the Ministry of Health and Social Welfare was in charge of distribution and this programme will be run better by this fund.
The budget, which was previously E50 million, has increased to E94 million in the hope of benefitting the elderly.
During the meeting it was said that the money that was being paid out quarterly will start being paid out on a monthly basis. This will possibly start on April 1, 2008. The total amount of the payout has not been finalised, but this will be discussed and revealed possibly by the next week after deliberations with Parliament.
